In a previous article (Personal Power – What Does That Mean) I wrote:
You have your power when, you live in alignment with your personal values. This means living with respect for yourself, being true to yourself and what is important to you.
To go a little deeper into that thought; in my opinion finding out, or rediscovering, what my personal values are has been one of the most important steps in my life. When I look at the Me before I had reconnected to these very important parts of me, I think of a loose cannon! I had lots of things in place, but all the same my life was not making me happy. Once I discovered what is truly important to me, what nurtures me, what allows me to feel like myself, my life started changing for the better. The reason being I felt I had a foundation to live from. It was so exciting to find out that these values are part of me, so to speak inside of me. Living in alignment with them does not actually cost me any money! What a relief! The cost comes in the form of time. I have to take the time to nurture them in order to feel strong and full of power.
I found out that one of my personal values is open communication. Without this I would not truly find any comfort. I am uncomfortable living with grey areas. I much prefer knowing what is or is not going on. Another one is Nature. It is very important to me to be able to access it easily. Even when I have lived in big cities, or travel to them, the first place I look for is the local park. I must know where to go for an early morning walk. Being in nature revitalizes me, allows me to breathe and for my mind to clear itself. These are examples of two of my personal values and what actions I have learned to take to feel I am being true to them. With my personal values in place and all getting their due respect I have never felt more power or energy. I have learned how to live my life valuing all of them which gives me the balance to be a good life coach.
I work with a variety of people faced with a variety of concerns that are holding their lives back. One of the exercises I find is the most empowering is guiding them to find out what exactly is important to them, what their Personal Values are. Not what family, friends, partners, society, gurus or the media deem as important but what is truly of value to them personally…deep down inside, in their hearts. During the session once the client has written their list of Values down, it is wonderful to feel the joy and motivation surfacing in them. All of a sudden they are eager to make the difference in their day to day life because they know where to start. They have found out which part is lacking the necessary maintenance.
